Shirley Neighbourhood Care lunch clubs will re-launch at the end of July 2021 and will take place every Monday and Thursday at West Wickham & Shirley Baptist Church on Wickham Road in Shirley CR0 8EH.   Clients have a hot meal of a main course and a pudding.   The food is cooked by our resident chef, Tanya, and will include good home cooked dishes.  Volunteers help to look after the clients and serve the lunch.    Places need to be booked in advance and there may be a waiting list for space. The cost of the lunch club is £8 per person.  Clients who are eligible for Dial-A-Ride can book transport to and from the lunch club.

Our shopping bus visits two local supermarkets – Sainsbury’s in West Wickham, and Tesco’s superstore at Elmers End – on alternate Tuesday and Wednesday mornings and afternoons.  The morning bus leaves our office at 9.30am and picks up clients from home and the afternoon bus departs at 1pm.   There is always a volunteer escort on the bus who will help with shopping and taking the bags indoors on the return journey.   Clients will all be home by 12.30pm at the latest in the morning and 4pm in the afternoon.  The cost of a place on the shopping bus is £7 for a return journey.

For those who find it hard to get out and meet other people and are looking for companionship, our befriending service can help by providing regular visits from one of our volunteers.   After an initial introductory visit, clients can agree the frequency of the visits with the befriender.  There is a waiting list for this service.

SNC can provide volunteer drivers to take clients to medical appointments such as the doctors, opticians, clinics, chiropody and local hospitals.   The volunteer can wait, or come back later for the return journey, dependent on the length of the appointment.   Trips should be booked through the office and the volunteer driver will ring the client the day before to confirm the appointment.  Clients usually make a donation in return for the service.

SNC organises regular outings.  We visit garden centres, tea shops and restaurants and pubs for lunch and details are distributed in our regular newsletter which is delivered by our volunteers to all our clients on a quarterly basis.   There is usually a charge of between £5 and £10 for travel per outing and clients settle their own refreshment bills.   Prices will vary according to the distance and detail of the outing.

Come and see the latest films in a comfortable setting at Shirley Methodist Church with refreshments included.  Thanks to Shirley’s Councillors, we now have state-of-the-art equipment with a big screen and great sound!  The price is £5 per person with an additional £5 if transport is required.   Contact the SNC office for dates and film titles and to book your place:  Telephone 0208 662 9599.  Although SNC has moved the office to West Wickham & Shirley Baptist Church, our film club will remain at the Methodist Church.
